8 Values of free expression

Blog Post #3 ~ 8 values of free expression

8 Values of Free Expression

There are 8 values of free expression. They are marketplace of ideas, participation in self government, stable change, individual self-fulfillment, check on government powers, promote tolerance, promote innovation, and protect Dissent. Jefferson, Maddison and other founders saw to that we have the right to free speech. It is important to say what you are thinking even if it is about the government. In the USA you can talk bad about the government and not have to deal with a "king" chopping your head off.

When I think of Freedom of speech today I think of Elon Musk. He is the voice of free speech and non-censorship in todays world. He remade twitter into X and made the app so that you can say whatever you like and you will not get banned for saying what you think is correct or morally right. Elon doesn't want the little guys opinion that isn't a popular thing to say to be censored and told "you can't say that". It is important I'm America that we receive all of the information and not just the information that certain parties want us to hear. America was built on the idea that you can speak you mind without consequence. Of course there is certain things you cannot say. For example you can't say you are going to kill the president.

One of the 8 values that resonate with me is promote innovation because of Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley has been a major hub for all technological innovation. This convention is for entrepreneurs to speak freely and exchange ideas. Entrepreneurs can freely share ideas and experiment without excessive government interference or fear of censorship. There are giant companies that took risks and steered away from social norms to create new radical ideas. Without risk takers like this we wouldn't have companies like Apple, Google, and Tesla.

Another one of the 8 values that I will be sharing is check on governmental power. The relationship between check on governmental powers and the freedom of expression has been and always will be a central building block to American democracy. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson realized that a free society could only function if the society had the right of free speech. Free speech is just another way that the people can stand up to the government and check the governments power. If the people of the Untied States of America feel that the government has too much power they can speak out against it and hopefully get the governments power checked and then balanced.

Nixon announces intention to resign, Aug. 8, 1974 - POLITICO

There is one time that comes to mind that I believe that we talked about in class that is Watergate. This is when Richard Nixon attempted to use executive privilege to withhold tapes that were crucial in the investigation of the Watergate scandal. This was also known as United States v. Richard Nixon.

The check in this instance was the Judiciary court stepping in to check the executive branch's power. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court that Nixon must comply and bring the tapes forward. The court argued that the president's claim of executive privilege could not override the courts decision. This is a clear example of the judicial system working for the people.

The balance was that the Supreme Court ruled that no one is above the law not even the president. This reenforced the idea of checks and balances even more. Nixon "complied" which lead to his resignation. Although the tapes were never seen the judicial process worked and the idea of checks and balances worked.

Blog Post #2 ~ Supreme Court Reflection

Supreme Court Reflection The Supreme Court: Current Justices | Supreme Court Historical Society

What did you learn about the Supreme Court that you didn't already know?

I know what Judicial Review can strike down laws or executive actions that they view as unconstitutional. One thing that I did not know about Judicial review that I learned in one of the videos is that Judicial review was established in the case of Marbury v. Madison. One other small thing that I did not know was that the Republican Party was in direct line with wanting the states and individual to have more power than the federal government. I originally thought that both parties would want this.

What is the most important take-away about the Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court has an immense amount of power in their hands. They have the power to interpret the constitution how they see fit. This would shape the undemanding of fundamental laws and the structure of government. This is scary for the fact that they so much power and can basically do what they want with it. I know there is ways to check and balance the power they have but it is scary how much power they have in there hands. This is also what is most interesting and surprising to me the most out of everything. These justices of the court receive over 2000 cases and take only 100s. Then choose which cases to take and that power is just so mind blowing.

How did the video change the way you thought of the supreme court?

The Videos gave me the idea that the Supreme Court has a lot of power and I understand why the states want to hold more power. If I was an individual in a state and didn't agree with a Supreme Court decision I would be very angry. Going through the videos I learned the idea of nullification and now know that the Supreme Court can indeed not push there ideas onto states without a fight if needed.

#2 In the last years, crypto currency and stock have been a great interest to me. I use Telegram to see what other coin and stock traders are looking at and what trends mean. Most of the time people buy certain coins and stocks based on political matters in the world. I invest based off of what these people say or think is going to happen. A lot of the time they are right and I profit from what they say. I found telegram through a friend's mom that invests a ton.

#3 Paramount is what I have been using for the last 5 years to watch champions league soccer. This is where the best teams face off in a tournament to crown the top team of the world. I watch these games for entertainment and because my favorite team has played in this tournament many times. This streaming service also has shows that I watch. Overall Paramount is my main source of entertainment in my life.

#4 I have been watching YouTube for most of my life at this point. Youtube is another entertainment platform for me. Youtube is where I watch the Sidemen. They do a lot of European football stuff and I find most of what they do to be very funny. I also use Youtube for trailers for new video games and movies. I am very interested in how games are made and for the sole reason that I like to play them.

#5 Instagram is where I connect with friends in a picture format. I can see pictures of my friends from back home in New York and connect with new friends at High Point. Instagram is where I first found High Point University. If instagram was not a thing there is a great chance I would not be a High Point right now. I also use Instagram Reels on Insta. This is like TikTok in the sense that the videos are short. It is easy to get quick and efficient news out to the people.
